Springfield Trapdoor Rifle Model 1888 Rid Bayonet
Description: Serial #515140, .45-70, 32 1/2” barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a small amount of freckling within the grooves. This ramrod bayonet-equipped rifle has retained traces of the original blue finish with the balance having a shiny, smooth plum-brown underlying metal. The 1884 dated breech block has matching dark freckling with original color case-hardening still visible along the underside. The walnut stock has been refinished to excellent condition with a few scattered handling marks in the period added, ruddy-tinted military oil finish, and a still clear and legible “SWP/1891” cartouche on the left side of the wrist. At some point in the rifle's career, decorative wooden laurel branch inlays were added to both sides of the stock (as well as a pair of triangles behind the barrel band on both sides). The work is quite well done and is a very nice example of folk art marquetry. Additionally, there are some crude initials on the left side of the butt: “MM/AG”. The stock compartment is empty and the buttplate has a mottled plum-brown patina with a few very minor pinprick pits here and there. This is a very nice Trapdoor that has some truly handsome folk art embellishments.
