Steyr GB 9mm Pistol
Description: Serial #P07855, 9mm Para., 5 1/4” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This was Steyr's entry into the Austrian pistol trial that was eventually won by the Glock 17. The gun uses a delayed blowback gas system that has a fixed, ported barrel and seals the front portion of the slide to act as a piston. The metal retains 97-98% of the original commercial quality blue finish on the slide and slide lever, silvering slightly along some of the projecting edges and bearing surfaces, while the “crinkled” black finish on the matching numbered frame is in excellent condition without any chips or flaking (although there is a small and unobtrusive import marking on the right side ahead of the proofs). The checkered black plastic grips are in excellent condition and exhibit practically no use or wear. A single original 18 rd. magazine is included. The GB uses a gas system very similar to the one found on the late-war Volkssturmgewehr (VG.1-5) and utilized a number of advanced features for its day including the absence of a manual safety, high capacity magazine, and polygonal rifling. Ultimately, Steyr also lost the U.S. pistol trials when the Beretta 92 was selected by the Defense Departmnet. The GB continued as a commercial offering until it was discontinued in the late '80s. This example is in excellent, little-used condition and would make a terrific addition to any collection of unusual handguns.
