Description: ORNATE PRESENTATION US. 1872 LILLEY & CO. CAVALRY OFFICERS SABER INSCRIBED TO MAJ. S. S. MORROW, 4TH KENTUCKY REGT. CIRCA 1898. 40” o/a with 33” nickel plated blade with etched and engraved military motifs and large “U.S.” and “AMERICAN EAGLE”. M. C. Lilley & Co., Columbus, Ohio maker’s cartouche etched on the ricasso. Gold plated brass hilt with “FEDERAL SHIELD” on pommel and “AMERICAN EAGLE” on the guard. Fancy shark skin grip wrap with all the original retaining wire. Extra ornate open work gold plated brass scabbard mounts with lozenges of a shield with “MEDUSA HEAD” and “FEDERAL EAGLE” in high relief. Nickel plated steel scabbard engraved “PRESENTED TO/ MAJ. S. S. MORROW/ FROM/ OFFICERS AND PRIVATES/ 2ND BATT., 4TH KY”. Major Scott S. Morrow commanded the 2nd Battalion 4th Kentucky Volunteers during the Spanish American War. Most of this regiment were from the mountain area of Kentucky and were known as the “Mountain Men”. Major Morrow’s brother was Governor of Kentucky and the family were from Somerset and Frankfort. Excellent plus condition overall and 100% original. Mounts and hilt retain nearly all the gilt. Directly from descendants of Major Morrow and never on the market before. The Morrows of Kentucky were well known in Kentucky Military History with the Major’s grandfather, Judge T.Z. Morrow commanding the 32nd Kentucky U.S. Volunteers during the Civil War. SOLD |
