Made in 1855 by I.N. Johnson who was formerly in partnership with H. Aston, another well known maker of this sturdy military arm. .54 caliber, 8 & 1/2" round barrel finished in the bright steel. There is a brass blade type front sight. The action is very strong. The barrel, lock, hammer and captive ramrod were all finished in the bright steel. The trigger guard, backstrap, butt cap and barrel band are all brass. The trigger is blued. The lock is marked "I.N. Johnson" under "U.S.", and behind the hammer:" Midd-tn, Conn. 1855" The top of the barrel near the hammer bears the inspectors initials "J W " over a "P". 10,000 of these pistols were made by this Johnson company. The butt is quite heavy so that the gun could be used as a club if the soldier did not have time to reload-which appears to have been the case. The solid walnut stock extends about 3/4 of the pistol length. There is no cartouche visible and probably never had one, which was not unusual. This is a handsome looking pistol and one that has certainly seen lots of action and has earned its place in our countries history. Antique- No FFL needed.
