Although Griffin & Howe cannot of course condone this and take no responsibility for the consequences of such action, the previous owner of this .450 Black Powder Express rifle shared the following information with us. “I loaded for my Holland double rifle, per the tables in Graeme Wright's book, ‘Shooting the British Double Rifle’. 48 grains of IMR 4198 in a Kynoch case with about 10 grains of Dacron filler, Woodleigh 350 grain copper clad soft nose bullet velocity is between 1850 & 1950 ft/sec. This load could be made by Safari Ltd, NY or Superior Ammo, SC. It is a great load for driven boar or most anything in North America. Per Frank Barnes in his most recent Cartridges of the World 13th edition; The 3 ¼” BPE version became one of the most popular cartridges ever devised. It was a deer cartridge or for medium size game. Selous and Taylor both used this cartridge to take elephant, but they both knew this was something of a stunt. The .450 BP and the nitro for black versions lasted well into the 20th century and many rifles that chamber them are still in use.The editor of this chapter, Richard Mann, once owned a plain grade Watson hammer double rifle that would regulate perfectly with bullets from 300 to 400 grains and shot to the sights at more than a ½ mile. If someone wants to shoot driven Boar with an elegant Holland Royal this would be a much lower cost solution than a newer nitro Holland double rifle. I hope you find this helpful. Best, Bob” (Griffin & Howe cannot of course condone this and take no responsibility for the consequences of such action). R-1 SOLD |
