Butcher/Skinner Sheffield Hunting Knife
Description:
This Sheffield butcher-skinning knife shows a 10" blade with an overall length of 14 1/2" .
The blade shows spotted heavy pitting and the makers name "Joseph Beals & Sons" with their "hogs head" logo
marking; circa 1876.
This firm must have exported a large number of their knives to North America and throughout the Empire.
The work "The Sheffield Bowie and Pocket Knife" by Richard Washer shows the Beals logos on page 18.
The book also shows a number of Western images including a covered wagon and Indians. This piece originated out of Western Canada and may have been a hunters piece.
This knife rides in its original leather sheath.
Crudely decorated and held by 9 buck leather thongs;
a Western piece or a knife which may have come back to Canada after the South African War.
