Marlin Model 1893 Take Down in 30-30 Caliber SOLD
Description: This is a neat old Marlin with a lot of character. This Model 1893 Take-Down rifle was manufactured by the Marlin Firearms Company around 1908 and featured a case hardened receiver with a blued 26" inch full octagon barrel chambered in 30-30 Winchester. It is a Take-Down model and was designed to break down into two pieces for compact carry or storage. To take it down the lever between the barrel and reciever is pushed/tapped outward, the bolt is opened, the magazine tube is pulled out about an inch from the muzzle by depressing the catch at the end, and then the barrel and forearm assembly are screwed out of the reciever. It was a very strong take-down design and quickly earned a reputation for being durable and easy to operate. This Marlin is in good condition overall. The original factory case colors on the receiver are mostly gone but there are some small areas still showing color. In areas that no longer show case colors the metal has turned to a gray/brown patina that still looks nice and honest. There is no pitting, only some small dings around the take-down lever. The barrel and magazine tube still show some of the original factory blue finish particularly in the somewhat protected areas. The wear that shows on the barrel and magazine tube is consistent with the rest of the rifle. The bore is in good shape overall on this 1893 Model. While the bore shows some light pitting throughout the rifling still shows strong lands and grooves, and it is free from bulges or dents. There is a lot of life left in the barrel and it should still be very accurate. The original Walnut forearm and buttstock are still present on this Marlin. The forearm is in excellent shape and is free from cracks or repairs. The forearm shows honest wear to the gloss finish and just has some minor handling marks. The buttstock still shows a lot of the gloss finish but has been broken at the wrist and period repaired. It was broken right at the end of the upper and lower tang like it was used as a club. To repair it a previous owner cut hourglass shaped wooden inserts and inlaid them on either side and glued it back together. You can see close-ups of this repair in the pictures provided. The repair looks very old and appears to be extremely solid. Everything on this Marlin Model 1893 Take-Down works 100% like the day it left the factory. The action is smooth and locks up tight. The hammer still has both the safety position and full-cock, and the trigger breaks cleanly with no grittiness. The threads on the barrel assembly and in the reciever are in excellent shape and both parts mate up perfectly tight and square. This Marlin would make an excellent addition to a collection owned by someone who appreciates some character and wear on their guns. It also would make an excellent decorator in a "man cave" or above a fireplace.
