1956 SMITH & WESSON S&W PRE-29 PRE MODEL 29 4 SCREW 6" BLUED .44 MAGNUM
Description: Taken on trade through our retail store, this firearm is in really nice condition for being 60 years old. It does show light signs of being carried and used here and there but here is no major marks to speak of. The action of this Smith is amazing, smooth as glass cylinder and perfect trigger lock-up. The only unfortunate part of this revolver is that at some point in it's life the original grips were replaced with target grips likely from the 1970's. Pictures best describe this firearm for exactly what it is and what you will receive! Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: Pre-29 4 Screw Serial Number: S170257 (Manufactured in Late 1956) Frame Size: N Caliber: .44 Remington Magnum / .44 Special Capacity: 6 Round Cylinder (Recessed) Barrel: 6" (Pinned) Front Sight: Pinned Patridge Rear Sight: S&W Fully Adjustable Features: Color Case Hardened Trigger & Hammer Grips: 1970's Era Target Grips Finish: Deep Bluing Smith & Wesson's production of a large N-frame revolver chambered for the .44 Remington Magnum cartridge began in 1955. It was not until 1957 that this revolver received the name "Model 29". The revolvers that preceded the 29 are known as "Pre-29's". The earliest of these revolvers are the 5 Screw series manufactured in 1955 only, followed by 4 Screw models manufactured in 1956 only before receiving the 29 stamp. Elmer Keith's achievements in maximizing the power and performance of the .44 Special was the inspiration and driving force behind the introduction of the .44 Magnum by Smith & Wesson. His intention for the new round was for it to be used in sidearms for hunters of large, dangerous game, rather than for self-defense, though with today's specialty cartridges, it can be a good defensive round. It remained primarily the province of handgun enthusiasts, some law enforcement personnel and hunters until 1971, when Clint Eastwood made it famous as "the most powerful handgun in the world" in the movie Dirty Harry. After the movie's release, retailers had trouble keeping the Model 29 in stock. The Model 29 was offered with 3", 4", 5", 6", 6½", 8?" and, later, 10?" barrel lengths as standard models. Other barrel lengths were available either by special order from Smith & Wesson's Custom Shop or custom built by gunsmiths. The 5" barreled variant had a full length underlug. Finish options available included a highly polished blued or nickel-plated surface. Shipping to the Lower 48 Only KNOW YOUR LOCAL & STATE LAWS!!
