Antique Smith & Wesson 2nd Model American. Excellent Mechanics. Some Finish Remaining.
Description: Antique Smith & Wesson 2nd model American. Here is another nice and honest Smith & Wesson 2nd model American. Is was in the .44 American caliber but the chambers have been profesionally reamed to take the more common .44 Russian cartridge. I have seen many of these altered to shoot the .44 Russian as the .44 American is very difficulte to load. When they quit making the .44 American, the owners had these reamed to take the .44 Russian as they still was using the revolvers well after the production of the .44 Amercan round. The .44 Russian round fits perfectly in all the chambers. Still has the original length 8" barrel.. S/N 16047. These were made only from 1872 to 1874. Matching assembly numbers 941 on cylinder and barrel latch. Can't see it on the barrel but I am sure it is all correct. Sometimes the barrels did not get marked with the numbers on these models. The gun still has some original nickel finish. As you can see, all of the finish is on the right side of the gun. The barrel has about 35% or so. The frame has about the same amount. and no finish on the cylinder. The case colors on the hammer and the trigger guard have long faded away. The balance of the metal is light gray brown patina. No pitting to speak of and it does not look like it has ever been cleaned on or messed with. The mechanics are excellent. Crisp and tight as a new gun. Lock up is tight and positive. Rock solid barrel to frame fit at the latch and the hinge. NO wobbles or rattles on this one at all. No cylinder front to rear movement. Head space is perfect. NO cylider wobble on the arbor pin either. This is a very tight and solid gun. This gun shoots great with black powder loads The extractor is in excellent condition and works perfectly. Still has the orignal knurrled extractor trip on the bottom. Many of these have been broken and replaced. Hammer notches are perfect and positive. Un touched front sight never messed with. All the screws are very good and all are serviceable. The markings are all very good also. The grips are decent and the right one is matching S/N. They show some old cleaning or shrinking as just a bit undersized but do not detract from this ole hogleg. No issues as far as cracks or splits and look very good to the guns condition. The bore is very good with strong rifling all the way through and just some very minor roughness as can be expected. The chambers are very good as well. About all I can see about this one. These are the very first big bore cartridge revolvers on the frontier besides the Colt Conversions. Many you see have been used to death and are not longer serviceable without the help of a very knowledgeable gunsmith and several hundred dollars.!!! OR still have most all their finish and are bringing several thousand dollars.. Many have had their barrels cut... Here is a pretty decent example at a reasonable price and is the middle of the road condition that you can still shoot AND afford. Still has some original finish for the money. Tight as new with no mechanical issues. I have it priced the same as the other one I have listed as the other one has way more finish but has a couple issues. If one of them sell, I am removing the other one as I want to keep one of them and it does not matter to me which one it is. Both are great shooters and like new mechanics and are getting hard to find at these prices.. $35 insurd shipping. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. SOLD Antique: Yes |
