Colt 1878 DA Sheriff Model .45 Cal. Revolver with Factory Leter
Description: This is a very nice Colt 1878 Doule Action revolver in the very desirable "Sheriff's Model" configuration with the 4" barrel and no ejector. There were only 560 1878 Sheriff's Models made in all barrel lengths and finishes. This is one of the very last ones made and was shipped on August 19, 1905 to Charles Godfrey Company in New York. Godfrey purchased most of the final 1878's made. Except for 13 clean up guns shipped in 1907 (none were shipped in 1906). The August 1905 shipment was the last regular shipment of Colt Model 1878 revolvers. See Don Wilkerson's excellent book on the Model 1878 at page 220. At this page Wilkenson pictures No. 51176 (one number away) also a 4" gun with ejector from this shipment. As detailed by Wilkerson at 221, many 1878's after 1901 had leftover RAC stamped cylinders not used in making the Model 1902 for the US government. This gun has such a cylinder and the inspection mark is shown in the pictures. This is another example of Colt's well known practice of not throwing anything away! Condition: As shown in the pictures, this gun has much of the original blue remaining, 75% or so. The action works OK but is a little ratchety on pulling the trigger through. The gun was examined by Sal Lanara, noted 1878 expert, who attributes this to an ill-fitting or too strong sear spring. This is really the only knock on this gun and could presumably be remedied with a good original sear spring. He also indicates that it should smooth out with use. In any event, I don't recommend shooting these old guns so that should not be much of an issue. Factory letter detailing the gun's configuration and shipment information will be included.
