49er DRAGOON-Size Allen & Thurber PEPPERBOX Pistol
Description: 49er DRAGOON-Size Allen & Thurber PEPPERBOX Pistol LARGE Early AMERICAN 6-Shot Double Action Revolver Here we present an antique Allen & Thurber Bar Hammer Dragoon-sized Pepperbox Percussion Revolver, made circa 1847 in Worcester, Massachusetts. These were the first American double action revolvers, and they enjoyed even greater popularity than Sam Colt’s initial designs. The history that these handguns enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. They were also popular with Westward travelers. An early Allen Pepperbox was also the personal weapon of the “Lion of the Lord, Brigham Young, of the Latter-day Saints. These guns are true relics of American history. While many of these Pepperbox Revolvers were small in size, making them handy for everyday carry by the average civilian, this specimen is known as the “Dragoon” for its large size and greater firepower. These are scarcer than the smaller variants. It would have been carried on the belt, as seen in daguerreotypes from the period, especially Antebellum and during the American Civil War. It features larger .35 caliber bores, longer ribbed barrel cluster, and a hook on the trigger guard for the middle finger to rest and compensate for the much heavier barrel. As befitted the times, the frame and nipple shield is nicely scroll engraved with a floral design. Since many of these are known to have gone West for the 1849 California Gold Rush, they are known to collectors as “49ers”. A note to collectors: these pistols were made in at least 50 different variations, making this an excellent area to start collecting. The overall condition of this piece is near fine. The barrel cluster and nipple shield show traces of original blue, with the rest of the metal surfaces having a mild patina. The markings are legible. “ALLEN & THURBER/WORCESTER” and “PATENTED/1837/CAST STEEL” on the barrel. “ALLEN’S PATENT” on bar hammer. All numbers match. Grips are also numbered to match and are in fantastic condition. The bores are very good, smooth and clean. The action is excellent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 5-1/8 inches in length (measured just forward of nipples). Caliber: .35 percussion Bores are in very good condition. The firing mechanism is excellent. Overall condition as seen in photos. Here is a fantastic specimen of a Dragoon Sized Pepperbox by Allen & Thurber! Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
