REMINGTON MODEL 1890 REVOLVER IN 44-40 W.C.F. PROBABLE (INDIAN?) POLICE OR MILITARY ISSUE
Description: *****SOLD*****
Description:
The main serial number on the Remington cartridge single action 44 and 45 models is always found under the left grip on the butt strap. The number 1350 appears here and on the trigger guard tab (inserted under frame) as expected. However, this revolver also is numbered Externally on the frame forward of trigger guard and on the butt. If this gun was issued to a police or military force that required periodic Inventory of its Weapons, then who would want to remove the Grips each time for Inventory?? Thus it is believed that this revolver’s history was involved with some enforcement unit, yet to be revealed. Possible Reservation Indian Police? Of the 2,000 produced 1891-94, some Remington 1890’s did in fact see service by Indian police on Western reservations.
The bottom barrel flat and upper ejector housing flat show no assembly numbers, unlike the model 1888 transition Remingtons (during the ownership change from E. Remington & Sons to Remington Arms Company). It has the barrel address seen only on the rare 1890 model, of which about 2000 were manufactured. The barrel measures exactly 5-3/4”, with the muzzle properly crowned. The front sight is the usual German silver, made a bit thinner to suit the taste of a prior owner.
Originally blued, there is no original finish remaining, but all surfaces are a natural patina. All factory markings, including the “44 C.F.W.” remain very bold.
The bore has 5 strong lands and grooves, with the usual scattered light pitting. The mechanism functions but needs some minor adjustment to cause the cylinder to rotate a few degrees further. The grips show signs of past repairs to the toes and that weak spot where the grip locator pin was too close to the butt.
However, this Rare Remington 1890 is priced to sell quickly at $2200.
Terms:
