S&W .38 DA 4th Model Revolver, Pre-1898
Description:
This is a 4th Model DA Smith and Wesson Top Break Revolver. Pre-1898 serial number is in the 339,000 range and falls under the 382,000 cut-off. See page 229, Flaydermans Guide to Antique American Firearms, 9th edition. Matching numbers throughout which includes the frame, cylinder, barrel, and latch. Standard nickel finish with 3-1/4" barrel, and checkered hard rubber grips. Top of barrel has the 1880, 1882, and 1889 patent dates along with the S&W Monogram on the right side of the frame.
Overall Condition grades to NRA Antique Very Good+. Frame has 95% original nickel while the barrel has flaked to 20% with the balance worn to a light silvery gray. Cylinder shows 5-10% nickel in the flutes. Trigger and hammer show 30% original case colors while the trigger guard and barrel latch retain 50% original blue. Very Good screws and pins overall. Checkered hard rubber grips have S&W logo with the checkering somewhat worn but quite discernable with no bare spots. Action works in both single action and full double action modes. Ejectors work. Good latch with just a hint of play. Bore is Fair+ to Good- with discernable rifling but frosty. Good solid example of an early S&W DA Revolver. These early DA's with antique serial numbers have become increasingly difficult to locate.
