S&W 38 Double Action Mfd. Circa 1881 Unfired In Box
Description:
This is a near Mint example of an early 2nd Model Smith and Wesson Double Action Pocket Revolver in .38 Caliber. Standard nickel finish, hard rubber grips, with 3 1/4" Barrel. Being a 2nd Model, it has the early 1880's style cylinder with the half flutes and double stop notches. S&W Produced this Model From 1880 to 1884 with over 120,000 units manufactured. Serial Number is in the 25,000 range and was probably built around Circa 1881. It comes in its original maroon factory box (which is numbered to the gun). This gun has never been fired. A friend of mine purchased this from the family that had owned it since new. Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Plus. The gun has 99.5% original nickel on the barrel (there is one small spot of rust on the top edge of the rib, 99.9% on the cylinder, 100% on the straps, and due to a few spots of rust on the right side and behind the hammer, the frame has 98% original nickel. My friend told me that when said when he pulled it from the box, there was an old piece of felt at the bottom which was stuck to the back right edge of the frame...hence the spots. At 135 years old, it looks better than most newer guns you'd find in a gun shop. Best of all, it has never been fired...see photos of the front and rear of the cylinder...no firing rings on any of the 5 chambers. Hammer and trigger show all their case colors with original blue on the trigger guard, barrel latch, and ejector star. Screws are unturned...pins have never been tapped. Bore is Mint. Grips are basically like new with no chips, cracks or repairs. They even have the tiny little patent date on the bottom left edge of the left grip which is is usually rubbed off from use. Box is in very good condition...a little frayed off the edges with no missing pieces, original instructions inside the lid, and intact orange end label which correctly corresponds the configuration of the Model, Caliber, Barrel Length, and type of Finish. The bottom of the box is serial numbered to the gun (albeit a bit faint, but still legible).
