Double Action Bar Hammer Transitional Revolver London Made
Description: NSN, .36 Caliber, 4 1/2” octagon barrel with a very good, lightly pitted bore. This is an attractive, London proofed revolver that has a pepperbox-style, DA only, bar hammer action firing a six-shot cylinder. The metal retains 75-80% of a maker re-applied nickel finish that has left the engraved floral vignettes on the sides of the cylindrical frame still crisp and clear, however the maker name and address on the barrel are barely visible; only the “C.H. GIL(KS) ---- (LO)NDON” are still legible along the top flat. The sides of the frame have flaked to the underlying plum-brown metal which carries over onto the flared recoil shield and onto the cylinder itself. The checkered walnut grip is in fair-good condition with numerous small handling marks and blemishes, as well as general flattening of the points. The mechanism is fully functional and still times and locks well. Charles Henry Gilks operated from 1856 until 1879 and occupied premises at 3 Union Row, Tower Hill, and 67 Minories during that time. This revolver was probably made prior to 1860 and is a great looking example of an early DA percussion revolver by a London maker.
