Manhattan Pepperbox 6 Shot .28 Caliber Cap & Ball
+++ SCARCE +++
Description: One of the most interesting facts about Manhattan Firearms is that despite the New York address stamped on them they were never made in Manhattan or even New York. This Pepperbox was actually made in Norwich, Ct. Pepperboxes in general were very popular in the 1850's and 60's as they fired multiple shots using a double action mechanism. They eliminated the process of cocking the hammer manually and allowed the carrier to fire quickly and rapidly if the situation dictated it. They were truly a formidable weapon at that time. This Manhattan Firearms made example is an all original and numbers matching 6 shot, .28 caliber Pepperbox with a 3" inch barrel cluster. There were only about 2500 of these made by this firm so they are quite scarce today, and even scarcer in working condition like this one. It was well-made and works properly even today. The original finish has turned blue/brown patina on the barrels and a gray/brown patina on the frame. All of the stampings are clean and legible on the hammer and barrels. The original two piece walnut grips are in good condition overall, with only the right side having a small crack at the butt. They are both numbered to the gun (223). The hammer, barrel cluster, frame, mainspring, grips, and frame are all numbered "223". This Pepperbox was probably carried quite a bit but rarely fired. It certainly was cared for and not abused given the mechanical condition. This was a very important design in the evolution of self defense pistols in the U.S., and this is a rare chance to get one that isn't an Allen or one of the other more often encountered makers. This would be an excellent addition to any antique firearms collection.
