Manhattan - London Pistol Company .31 Caliber
Description: Manhattan - London Pistol Company .31 cal Serial number 175 Waldo Nutter’s “Manhattan Firearms”, Chapters IV and V discuss the Manhattan .31 Caliber Revolvers and the London Pistol Company revolvers. Nutter concluded that the London revolvers were made by Manhattan concurrent with the .31 caliber Manhattan Revolvers, and that they were marked from the same run of serial numbers. Nutter reasoned that the London revolvers were not completed and issued for sale until after January 1860. All of the London revolvers Nutter examined had the following language stamped forward of the trigger guard: PATENTED DEC. 27. 1859 Nutter quoted Sam E. Smith’s The Gun Collectors Letter, Issue #5, December 25, 1946, article, which concluded that “ . . . less than one thousand [London revolvers] appeared.” However, Nutter concluded Chapter V stating his “ . . . estimate that only a very few hundred were so marked.” A more recent online survey of Manhattan arms (://baconfirearms/London2.html) stated that their “ . . . research has uncovered fewer than three dozen known specimens today (April 2008).” Whoever may be correct, the simple fact is few of these revolvers were produced, and only a handful are extant. The London revolver offered in this posting has serial number 175. The serial number matches at all four serial number locations for these revolvers - on the bottom of the barrel under the loading lever, the frame inside the left grip, the ratchet end of the cylinder, and the wedge. (see photos) The revolver has a five chamber cylinder. The hammer holds half and full cock. The action is strong, locks tightly and indexes properly. The barrel address is clear and reads: LONDON PISTOL COMPANY The initials JAM were lightly printed inside the left grip. A four pointed star was scored inside the right grip. (see photos) The frame forward of the trigger guard clearly states the patent information stated above. (see photos) The trigger guard is small, which is correct for the model. The grips are excellent and small, which is correct for the model. The engraving on the frame, cylinder, and back strap are clear and readable. The octagonal barrel is four inches long. It has the correct brass post-type front sight. (see photos) The bore has strong rifling with light pitting – on a scale of 1 to 10, my opinion is 8/9. The cylinder has 10 notches. The nipples are very good to excellent and clear of obstacles. The chambers are in very good condition. The extensions that made the v sight on the hammer when it was at full cock have been knocked off, probably from dry firing. (see photos) This revolver is an excellent example of an early Series 1 type London. It is a rare and well made revolver. It will enhance any collection.
