Manhattan Series III .36 Caliber Revolver - Kittredge
Description: Manhattan – Series III .36 Caliber Navy Serial number 40637 – Kittredge Manhattan produced about 30,000 Series III revolvers between late 1861 and early 1864. Waldo Nutter in “Manhattan Firearms” stated, “Although there were no marked innovations or model changes within the Series III revolvers, the period of their manufacture must have been a high point of prosperity for the company with production of the .36-caliber revolvers reaching a peak of 1,000 per month.” (pg 159) This revolver has the Benjamin Kittredge semi circle mark on the left side of the frame forward of the wedge. (see photos) In his “Manhattan Firearms” Waldo Nutter discussed the two Kittredge marks and stated, “We consider the Kittredge-marked Manhattan revolvers to be very desirable items . . .” (Nutter pg 169) The writers of ://baconfirearms/Kittredge.html stated: "Manhattan Navy revolvers are very infrequently seen with an engraved stamp on the left side of the barrel just above and to the left of the wedge. The stamp may appear in two formats. The rarer engraving is B. KITTREDGE & CO. in a single line. A more common engraving, yet still quite rare, is B KITTREDGE & CO/CIN O with Benjamin Kittredge's name in a semi-circle over a straight line CIN O for Cincinnati, Ohio." Benjamin Kittredge’s association with Manhattan Firearms Company was not limited to selling and distributing Manhattan firearms. He also invented the spring plate attached to the frame at the ratchet end of the cylinder, which prevented cross fire of primer caps and caused multiple cylinders to discharge at once. Benjamin Kittredge applied for a patent for his invention of the spring plate in December 1863, and on March 8, 1864, Patent number 41,848 was granted to him. Although many, but not all, of the Series IV, and V Manhattan .36 caliber revolvers were manufactured with spring plates, there are no extant documents showing that Kittredge assigned his patent to Manhattan or issued a license for Manhattan to use the patent. Obviously, there was an agreement, because Manhattan used the spring plate as early as September/October 1861, more than a two years before the patent was granted. Nutter opined that the spring plate was used experimentally in Series III revolvers in the 15,000 serial number range, but not on later serial numbers in that series. The revolver in this posting is serial number 40637, and it does not have a spring plate, although it does have a screw hole at the base of the frame under the hammer, which was the attaching point for the spring plates. Also, this revolver does not reference Kittredge’s patent in the one line barrel address. This revolver was manufactured in 1863. All of the serial numbers on this revolver match. The wedge does not have a serial number. The cylinder has five chambers and 10 notches. The nipples are very good and only one is obstructed. The chambers are in very good condition. The ratchet end of the cylinder clearly states PATENTED DEC. 27. 1859, between the nipples. The hammer is excellent and holds half and full cock. The action is strong, locks up tightly and indexes properly. The barrel address is clear and reads: MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. NEWARK NJ The engravings on the cylinder are faint and partially readable. The grips are excellent. The octagonal barrel is six and a half inches long. It has the correct blade-type front sight. The bore has strong rifling with light pitting – on a scale of 1 to 10, my opinion is 9. This revolver is an excellent example of a late Series III .36 caliber Manhattan Kittredge revolver. It is clean and in excellent condition. It will enhance any collection. Seller's Policies Payment for sales in the United States shall be made exclusively by cashier's check or money order.
