Colt Ft. Riley Identified 1851 Navy. Made in 1863. Sharp gun with metal mostly a gray patina with light spots of pitting in places. Trace amounts of original finish around the wedge. Grips still have about 50% of the original varnish. Cylinder scene is still visible. On the inside of the back strap, “FT RILEY” has been engraved. This is amateur work, but is nicely done and is original to the period. Following the “FT RILEY” markings appears to be “F E AD”. Ft. Riley was an important place along the Oregon Trail and the migration of people out west. It is located in Northern Kansas and was a main place of protection against Indians. This is a very neat historic gun with Civil War and Western connections. Further research on the initials might prove interesting…
