Pre-CIVIL WAR Antique COLT 1849 Pocket Revolver
Description:
Pre-CIVIL WAR Antique COLT 1849 Pocket Revolver
Fine Antebellum Example with Great Cylinder Scene!
Here we present an antique Colt 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver, made in 1859 in Hartford, Connecticut. Over 280,000 of these were produced by Colt’s factory at Hartford by the end of the American Civil War in 1865. These were very popular and saw a lot of use on the battlefield, on the home front and in the West. These were some of the smallest, handiest pocket revolvers of the time and sales were fantastic.
Though not a primary military arm during the American Civil War, handguns were commonly privately purchased by soldiers for use on the battlefield. Whether legend or fact, it is interesting to note something commonly read about pocket revolvers of the day: that while they could be used for self-defense against the enemy, many soldiers kept them on their person to defend themselves against an unwanted amputation in the primitive field hospitals that were notorious, even in their day.
This specimen features the two line “ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW YORK CITY”. It bears the famous Colt stagecoach holdup cylinder scene. The left side of the barrel is marked “2”, and the trigger guard is marked “V” and “G”.
Overall condition is very fine. The brass frame retains 80% of its silver plate finish. The loading lever retains bright case colors and the barrel still shows original blue. The markings are clear and legible. Serial numbers match. The cylinder scene is excellent. The grips are very fine and solid. The bore is very good and the action is excellent.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 4 inches in length.
Caliber: .36 percussion
The bore is in very good condition and the action is excellent.
Overall condition as seen in photos.
This is a very fine example of an antebellum Colt 1849 Pocket. It made it through the Civil War and comes to us 150 years later in great condition.
