COLT MODEL 1861 NAVY CONVERSION REVOLVER - MARTIAL MARKING
Description: Colt Model 1861 Navy Conversion Revolver - US martial - Cal. ,38 CF - 7 1/2" Bbl. SN 4386 (1861). -all matching on butt, guard, frame, cylinder, loading gate, and cylinder pin but not wedge. This is an original percussion Navy returned to Colt and converted in the mid 1870s. The bore is near excellent - bright and shiny with sharp rifling and shows some mild spotting in a few areas. Action is excellent with perfect timing and lock up and is very crisp. Metal on the barrel and ejector housing is VG, showing some oxidation, spotting and mild surface pits on the barrel that has drifted to a dark gray patina fading to a plum brown beneath. The head of the ejector rod has been replaced or repaired with a pin and is fully functional. The front sight has been replaced with a period brass sight in a dovetail and a brass rear sight in a dovetail has been installed - lettering on barrel is worn but mostly visible. The cylinder has drifted to a gray-brown patina and has a faint but completely visible scene - the cylinder face has the "P" sub -inspector mark and the "GG" inspector stamp. The frame shows no rust, pits, or corrosion and shows faint signs of darkening case color - the conversion overstamp patent markings are clear and the brass guard has a clear ".36 Cal." stamp. The grips are undamaged but show moderate wear, good fit to metal, and retain about 60% finish. This is an interesting old conversion and is likely one of the early Navy revolvers purchased on the civilian market by the Navy Dept. then returned to Colt for conversion - Inspector marks on the cylinder and serial range indicate that it was a legitimate" Navy" Navy that most likely went West after conversion and saw use there. This Colt 1861, except for the replaced sights and repaired ejector rod head is all original and in VG or better condition overall and is a very scarce item since only a few thousand of the 1861 Navy conversions were done by Colt and fewer yet have survived the years. A nice addition to an early Colt collection. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: COLT Model: 1861 Navy Caliber Info: .38 CF |
