FINE+ IDENTIFIED COLT MODEL 1860 REVOLVER
Description: Double++ on this piece, not only an extra-fine+ identified model 1860 Colt Army revolver, but also identified with great battle history, including being at Gettysburg. Spectacular condition on this Colt Army, very difficult to find in this condition. Metal overall is a smooth-age grey with thinning original factory blue. Strong original case colors on both sides of the frame, recoil and hammer. Metal bearing government inspection initials overall. Serial #23748 (early 1861 manufacture) matching, original period Colt wedge #3578. Cut for shoulder stock. Bore is very good+ with strong grooves, will clean better. Mechanics are tight. Excellent+ grips with clear, distinct cartouche on left. Beautiful oiled luster and feathered grain. No chips or cracks, a couple trivial surface dings on the bottom. Nice age mellow luster to brass. Cylinder scene rates a thinning .80%, "ENGAGED..." present and legible. Cylinder pins on back of cylinder are visible. Clear New York barrel address and "COLT'S PATENT" frame markings. Overall the gun is tight and solid wIth sharp edges. Unbugered screws. Bottom grip strap beautifully period engraved "SERGT. R. S. CAPEN. / CO. I.". Robert S Capen enlisted 09-13-1861 as Sergeant in the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, Company 'I'. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant 0n 08-04-1863. He was transferred on 02-12-1864 to the 4th Massachusetts Cavalry, Company "I", and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 08-23-1864. Further promotion to 1st Lieutenant on 05-08-1865. He mustered out at Richmond, VA 11-14-1865.
