RARE Variant Antique Colt ARTILLERY Model Single Action Army
Description: Antique 1st Generation Colt Single Action Army Revolver Artillery Model
With Rare Unserialized Replacement Frame
Here we present an antique 1st Generation Colt Single Action Army Revolver Artillery Model, made in 1890. The Colt Single Action Army is a worldwide icon of the United States of America and the Western Frontier. Wielded by both the worst of men and the best, the famous Single Action Army is also well-known as the Peacemaker.
The Artillery or Springfield Armory Model of the SAA is a period (1895-1903) armory or factory refinished gun to extend U.S. military service. Only about 17,000 of these refurbished guns were completed. In all but the rarest variant of the already rare Artillery Model, the serial numbers will be mixed. Many of these saw action in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War.
This specimen is a very rare example of an Artillery in that it utilizes both a factory replacement frame and trigger guard that are unserialized. John A. Kopec and H. Sterling Fenn, in their book Colt Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers…A Continuing Study, write about their study of a dozen Colt Artilleries with unserialized frames. Like this one, 10 of the 12 frames were not stamped with the typical Artillery “U.S.” mark, some had the 5-1/2 inch barrel marked “45 Colt” and were inspector marked “R.A.C.” under the barrel instead of serialized, and some also had unserialized cylinders with the “R.A.C.” mark stamped on the back. The conclusion was that these were some of the last U.S. martial Single Action Armies refurbished with the very last parts in 1903.
The overall condition of this example is very good. Much of the original blue finish remains on the barrel, in the cylinder flutes and on the ejector housing, about 30%. The frame was casehardened with some of the case colors still visible. All metal markings are clear and legible including barrel legend, patent dates, caliber designation, original serial number on the bottom of the grip frame, and Rinaldo A. Carr’s inspection marks on the barrel and cylinder. The grips are in good condition, showing traces of the inspector’s cartouches on either side as well as the inspector’s stamp on the bottom. The bore is fine and shiny. The action is excellent.
This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 5.5 inches in length.
Caliber: .45 Colt
Bore is in fine condition and shiny. The firearm is in excellent working order.
Overall condition as seen in photos.
Here is a great and rare Colt for your collection.
