Colt Model .38 D.A. (Aka Civilian New Army Model of 1903) Mfg. In 1905
Description:
This 112 year old Colt Model D.A. 38 revolver is a real beauty. Otherwise known as a Civilian New Army Model, this Colt D.A.(double action) 38 was made for the commercial market and exhibited a very high degree of fit and finish and can be identified as an Civilian New Army by the type of Colt logo on the grips. This model featured a 6 inch barrel, checkered black hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt logo, two sets of bolt stops on the cylinder, and a cylinder release that also functions to lock the cylinder when cocked. This 6-shot revolver was relatively well built and accurate despite the somewhat complicated locking action and counter-clockwise rotation of the cylinder when fired. These shortcomings were fixed in the later models made during 1908 by strengthening the lockwork and changing the rotation of the cylinder to clockwise. This example still shows a great majority of the factory high gloss blue finish typical of Colts made during this time, and a lot of the distinctive "fire blue" that was factory applied to the trigger and the back of the hammer. Most of the wear or thinning of the finish is on the high edges and grip straps of this revolver, and there is some wear typical of holster carry on the barrel. As you can see in the pictures this D.A. 38 is quite attractive overall, and what wear is visible is honest and even in appearance. The bore is bright and in excellent condition. It is free from pitting or erosion, and still shows nice sharp rifling throughout. The front sight has been altered to lower the impact of the bullet by the addition of taller blade that is pinned thru the original. This was commonly done because the sights from the factory were not adjustable, and firing the higher powered .38 Special round resulted in impacts higher than the .38 Colt loads the sights were regulated for originally. This model was serial numbered on the butt, and the frame, cylinder latch, crane, and grips were numbered with a 4 digit assembly number. All of these numbered parts match on this example including both grips. The grips are in excellent condition and are free from cracks, chips, or repairs. The checkering is still crisp and the Rampant Colt logos show no flaws. Everything on this Colt D.A. 38 works exactly as it did when it left the factory. This Colt would be an excellent addition to any collection and is C&R eligible. REDUCED! $795
