Lettered Antique Colt 1877 Double Action Revolver Purchased by Silas Bent with Genealogy
Description: Antique Colt 1877 Lightning Double Action Revolver Purchased by Silas Bent and Includes Influential Family’s Genealogy Here we present an antique Colt 1877 Lightning Double Action Revolver, shipped to William Read & Sons on June 8, 1878 and purchased by the Honorable Silas Bent of St. Louis, Missouri. The pages of his family’s genealogy is certainly worth the read and a couple excerpts are provided. A hard copy of the entire genealogy is included with the purchase of this historical treasure, along with the Colt factory letter. The Bent family can be traced back to 16th century England and have been in America since, 1638 when John Bent immigrated to Sudbury, Massachusetts. The family has been influential in American history since that time, to say the least. Dozens of books could be written on many of the family members as their stories intertwine with the likes of Meriwether Lewis, Ceran St. Vrain, and Kit Carson. Silas Bent’s father—who was also named Silas Bent (b. 1768)—was a surveyor and judge in the newly established Louisiana Territory, holding various government posts until eventually being commissioned Judge of the Supreme Court of Missouri Territory by President James Madison. Several of Silas the elder’s brothers are also quite famous, Charles Bent probably being the most famous and influential. He helped his brothers and Ceran St. Vrain establish “Bent’s Fort” in Colorado—a key fort along the Santa Fe Trail—before leading a wagon train and establishing a settlement in New Mexico. When the Mexican-American War broke out, Charles Bent was named governor of New Mexico and remained such until he was killed and scalped by Taos Indians at his home in Taos, NM. At Last, a bit about the Honorable Silas Bent, himself. He was born in South Saint Louis, Missouri in 1820, and went on to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. He accompanied Commodore Perry’s expedition to Japan and surveyed the island-nation’s coast, which had not been done to that point. He also assisted in rescuing 18 American shipwrecked sailors from captivity in Japan. Bayard Taylor, a colleague from Perry’s expedition, said “Too much credit, however, cannot be awarded to the different officers, and especially to Lieut. Bent, for the coolness and courage with which they prosecuted their work.” Accounts of Silas Bent (Sr.), Charles Bent, William Bent, Bent’s Fort, Bent County, Colorado, and finally, our man, the Honorable Silas Bent, have been attached for your viewing pleasure. From reading much of this genealogy, is it fair to say that the family’s adopted motto is “Nec temere nec timide”? “Neither rashly, nor timidly.” Now back to the gun. The serial is quite early and all numbers match. The nickel finish is in excellent condition. The firing mechanism if perfectly functional. They do not get much better than this! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. You won’t find another Colt Lightning with this pedigree. Barrel is 3.375 inches in length. Caliber: .38 Colt The bore and firing mechanism are in excellent condition. Overall condition as seen in photos. Add this incredible, historic Colt Lightning to your collection today! Very Fast.
