INTERESTING COLT M1851 NAVY POSSIBLE INDIAN USE FRONTIERSMAN
Description: **********SOLD********** Description: Certainly this is one of those colorful guns “If only it could tell its story”. Has brass tack decorated grips, and they appear to be very old. On a corner to right of front sight is heavy muzzle wear from carrying on right side, butt forward, in a holster that had worn out through the bottom, and the muzzle is striking the right rear curve of the saddle. The rammer has some dark areas that can only be caused by blood stains. This is one of the earlier small trigger guard Navy’s as made about 1857. Navy production ran 1850 to 1873. However, from eye witness accounts written at the time, we know that percussion revolvers were carried until at least 1878. The Government took about 80% of the newer Colt SAA’s being produced in Hartford 1873-78, and the London Agency also had a strong market for the new cartridge gun in various calibers. This Colt has very distinct matching serial numbers on barrel, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, cylinder, rammer, wedge, and arbor pin. The Hartford barrel address is bold as is “Colts Patent” on the frame. Colt factory inspector marks include M, 1, 3, S, and R in various places. The cylinder shows traces of the Texas Navy battle scene, with the balance being smooth and free from dents and other damage. Pictures of all six cylinder panels are shown. The frame is a smooth dull grey, and the barrel is a medium gray with the expected old random dings as shown in pictures. The rammer assembly is also a medium grey, with very smooth surfaces, and the blood stains as mentioned and pictured. The decorated walnut grips fit the brass straps nicely, never sanded and showing no signs of shrinkage. They have smooth surfaces with a slight sheen, and only minor loses at toe on both sides. The brass straps are somewhat bright on backstrap and trigger guard strap, with other areas toned darker. The mechanism works properly, with cylinder fully advancing and locking up each time hammer is cocked. The bore has strong lands and grooves, with the expected even distribution of light pitting. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would call this one a 7 bore condition. The brass pin front sight is present as is the normal sighting groove on hammer. Looks great with included holster, as shown.
