Colt Model 1909
SOLD
Description: For sale is a Colt Model 1909 in .45 Long Colt in good condition. These revolvers were built as a result of the failure of the 1905 Colt revolver in .38 Long Colt in U.S. military service in the Phillipines. The U.S. Army and Marine Corps found in battle that the 1905 Colt in .38 LC cartridge that they had adopted was not strong enough to be a reliable man stopper. As a result of these problems the U.S. Government searched for a replacement. Exhaustive testing determined that a cartridge of less than .44 caliber could not be counted on as a reliable "man stopper". In 1909 the Colt firm was given contracts to produce a number of the company's latest pattern large frame double action revolvers chambered for the .45 Colt cartridge for the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Navy. These "Model of 1909" revolvers were issued in limited numbers and were infinitely better for combat use than the M1892-1905 series of double action Colts in .38LC cartridge. This particular 1909 is a good honest gun with a nice patina. It has certainly seen some action and use and has the marks to prove it. As you can see in the pictures, only the protected areas show much of the factory Colt blue finish. The remainder of the gun has been worn to a gray patina. The original wooden grips are in good shape and are nice and tight, with no cracks or repairs. They are very smooth from handling and use. The bore is lightly pitted thru out but you can still make out the lands and grooves of the rifling. The action still works properly and with the trigger pulled at full lock, the cylinder is very tight. This is a nice original piece that has some real history to it at a great price!
