Colt Black Powder Single Action, Cal. .44/40 , 4 3/4 Inch 1st Generation
SOLD
Description:
Manufactured in 1890, this Single Action Army has all of the most desirable features. It is a 4 3/4 inch barrel, 44/40 caliber, with hard rubber eagle grips, black powder frame, and blue and color case-hardened finish. And it has condition. It is 100% original in every respect, with near perfect fire blue screws and a mint bore. The factory letter shows that it was shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company on April 17, 1890. This is an interesting and transitional time in Single Action markings. Within months of this gun's manufacture, the three line patent dates format was changed to three dates in two lines, and the circled Rampant Colt trademark was added on the frame. By 1892, the hard rubber, or gutta percha grips, had droped the spread winged American Eagle, and the caliber marking had just been eliminated from the trigger guard. You'll notice that the caliber marking ".44" is no where to be found on this gun. Only the "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" legend on the barrel tells us it is chambered for the .44/40 Winchester cartridge. In this condition, this 1890 gun is almost impossible to find in this finish and configuration. Includes factory letter.
