#4965 Colt S/A, 5-1/2”x45COLT, “U.S.” Artillery model with mixed serial numbers
Description: #4965 Colt S/A, 5-1/2”x45COLT, “U.S.” Artillery model with mixed serial numbers, as is correct, as these were dismantled Cavalry revolvers that were later altered in the late 1890s to the 5-1/2” length, then re-assembled (with no regard to matching parts), and refurbished to replace the ineffective 38COLT D/A models. The frame number is in the 113XXX range (1884) and thus being originally a David F. Clark inspected Cavalry, the remainding numbers all mixed. VG+ bore, about a 7 on a scale of 10. Tight smooth action and a crisp lock-up, but missing the safety notch and “fall-back” notch on the hammer. Half cock and full cock are fine and hammer is the correct vintage for this period of Colt. The exterior is mostly a smooth even bluish-brown metal overall, most of which is probably an old Cold Blue job, and the metal is very fine with no appreciable pitting. Address and patent markings are thin, probably weakened during the refurbishing in 1898; the barrel address being almost non-existant. The one-piece walnut grips have no cartouche; only an inspectors stamp on the bottom (R.A.C.) and are far too good condition so are obvious replacements (although they do fit excellent). Bulls-eye ejector rod head. The barrel, cylinder, and straps are all mixed numbers and most are DFC inspected (the cylinder is “C” inspected, which is Casey) and this is proper for these Artillery reworks . Suffice to say this (…and this is a VERY important fact)…that since many, if not most pre-1900 Single Actions have been restored, enhanced, and/or “juiced-up” to some degree, especially these military marked ones, one should always take that into consideration. This gun is priced with that in mind. . HOWEVER, this Artillery has a three page Kopec letter of authenticity (now a $350 cost!) and the letter verifies exactly what is stated in my description. Of course, the letter will beincluded in the sale. VG-VG+ $3195 SOLD Antique: Yes |
