Here we present an antique Remington-Rider Pocket Revolver, made circa 1870 in Ilion, New York. This was very likely the first double action cartridge revolver in the United States. The original Remington-Rider Pocket was designed by Joseph Rider and made by Remington in 1860. It was a percussion pistol, but a factory conversion to .32 rimfire became available. Only 2,000 total were ever made, percussion or cartridge converted, making this little revolver very collectible. Joseph Rider would go on to move from Newark, Ohio to Ilion, New York to work at Remington. He would later design the Remington-Rider Magazine pistol, also known for being quite the distinctive handgun of the late 19th century.
This particular specimen is a special order version, possibly one of a kind. As you will see, the frame in front of the trigger, the barrel and the cylinder plate is marked “1”, though the cylinder and the cylinder plate are each serial numbered “757”. The number “1” is likely to number it in its own batch as a special order gun due to the engraving. It is unlikely that many of these revolvers received engraving or the exact same engraving.
Overall condition is fine. The nickel finish is still quite intact. The trigger guard is made of silver and engraved. The barrel legend is clear. The bore is in good condition and the firing mechanism is excellent. This same example is featured, described and photographed in the “Remington Collector’s Journal”-2nd Quarter of 2016. The article concerning this firearm sheds some light on the rarity of engraved Riders and the unique serial numbering or “high grade batch number”.
