Antique Smith & Wesson 2nd Model American. Excellent Mechanics. Lots Of Original Finish
Description:
SOLD..Antique Smith & Wesson 2nd Model American. .44 American caliber but the cylinder has been bored out to take the .44 Russian cartridge.. Here is a great looking S&W American 2nd model. S/N 9340. These revolvers were made from 1872 to 1874. S/N range was 8000 to 32800 so this one was made probably first year. All matching with the assembly number 47 on the barrel, cylinder and barrel latch. The S/N 9340 is on the inside of the grip and the bottom of the frame. This gun is total original. The S/N on the butt is partially covered up with the initials LBH {see photo} but you can still make it out witha loop.. Has the standard 8" barrel. For some reason, someone has freebored or removed the rifling for about two inches on the cylinder end of the barrel. I sent this gun to the well known gun smith David Chcoine many years ago and he did some repairs needed on the action. He looked at the bore and beveled the edge of the cut and said it should shoot just fine. He was right. This gun shoots great. The rest of the bore is excellent with just very minor frosting and no pitting. The mechanics are like new. Crisp and tight as a new gun. Rock solid barrel to frame fit at the latch and the hinge. Perfect hammer and trigger sear notches. There is no play or wobble on this gun at all. Most of this model have seen hard and heavy use and need repairing even on high condition examples. This one operates like new.. The barrel has about 90% original finish. The frame has about 90% also including the front and rear grip straps... The cylinder has flaked to about 35%. The case colors on the hammer and the trigger guard have faded to a brown patina. NO pitting on the gun at all and the metal surfaces have never been cleaned on or messed with. Markings are all excellent. Untouched full front sight. The cylinder has been bored out to take the .44 Russian cartridge as mentioned above but they fit just a tad loose. They shoot just fine as this is what I have been shooting in the gun. The 44-40 cartridge fits perefctly tight but you have to seat the bullet a bit deeper in the case or it sticks out of the end of the chamber. I have fired it like this also and it still shoots great . I used black powder for shooting and it is a blast to shoot.. I also have and original un altered cylinder from the 1st model Russian or "Old Old Russian" in .44 Russian that I have installed and shot with but I put the original cylinder to the gun back in it for the photos. Either cylinder shoots fine.. The star ejectors have been broken off probably becuase they bored out the cylinder but the ejector still works perfectly and kicks out the empty cases.!!!{see photo}.. All the screws are sharp and crisp but the large screw at the hinge is burred up a little but still serviceable.. The grips are excellent with no cracks or chips and are original to the gun. They have had some varnish added over the years but look great and are a perfect factory fit. Now I realize this gun has a couple issues and I have priced it keeping this in mind. If the gun was perfect with no issues it would bring around $3800 to $4500 with the amount or original finish remaining. But that is not the case and it is what it is. Here is one that is a great shooter and looks great with 70% plus over all original finish remaining at a much cheaper price. Call 765-728-8049 for more photos or questions. $30 insured shipping.
