VERY POSSIBLY THE FIRST TARGET SIDE SWING REVOLVER EVER MADE BY S&W!
Description: A TRULY AMAZING SMITH & WESSON OFFERING! VERY POSSIBLY THE FIRST TARGET SIDE SWING REVOLVER EVER MADE BY S&W! This is a TARGET SIGHTED 1899 Military and Police .38 Special revolver serial number 19XX. I sent for a letter on this important revolver after finding it and the letter indicates this "SMITH & WESSON .38 MILITARY AND POLICE FIRST MODEL TARGET (MODEL 1899), CALIBER .38 SPECIAL..." with this serial number was shipped on January 31, 1900 to William H. Hoegee Hardware Co., Los Angeles, CA. (Lots of info can be found on this famous turn of the last century high class outfitter- big into high quality firearms of the time). The letter indicates revolver was shipped with 6 1/2" barrel, blue finish and checkered black hard rubber grips. There were very few target models made in this first run of 1899 M&Ps from 1899 to 1902 (20,975 revolvers in all) and this may just be the first! Generally fine deep blue overall with normal light handling wear and edge wear- grip straps thinning, a little flaking starting on the frame etc., exc. mech., fine bright bore with any roughness light and surface that ought to scrub out, good case color on the sides of the hammer and trigger, matching numbers except on grips which fit perfectly and are the correct type, blade/bead front sight with correct round notch rear target sight rear, super historical S&W as this is really the grandfather of all modern target models!
