Antique S&W Frontier Revolver 44-40 with Factory Letter
Description:
Serial #7616, .44-40 (.44 WCF), 6 1/2” barrel with a very good, bright bore that has light-moderate freckling within the grooves.
This is a very nice revolver that retains 80-85% of the original bright blue finish on the metal with silvering and fading at the muzzle, as well as along the sides of the barrel.
The rear of the frame has some mild, ruddy-brown freckling towards the grip/frame juncture, with further plum-brown fading along the gripstraps, and on the sideplate.
Most of the finish loss occurs on the cylinder which has original blue remaining within the flutes.
The balance of the cylinder has a mottled gray-brown patina, while the hammer and trigger have some original color case-hardened finish remaining and pale, freckled gray on the balance.
The frame, cylinder, barrel, and latch all have matching numbers.
The checkered hard rubber grips are extensively marked on the interior by a previous owner: “7777” on one panel, “G. SMITH/CSN/777” on the other.
The grips are in very good condition with some minor handling marks and some flattening of the points on both sides.
The lock-up is still tight and the revolver functions perfectly in both single and double-action.
The revolver is accompanied by a 2016 dated Smith & Wesson factory letter that lists a shipping date of October 28, 1891, to Schoverling, Daly & Gale Co., New York, NY.
This is a handsome DA Smith and is in fine original condition.
