Civil War E. Whitney Navy Revolver - 2nd Model - 2nd Type - Cal. .36 - 7 1/2" Bbl. SN 31902(1861 -1862 approx) - all matching numbers on barrel cylinder, lever, frame, and guard. Bore is VG plus to excellent - bright with sharp rifling - some scattered spotting in bore. Crisp action with good timing and lock-up. Metal is excellent overall with no exterior rust, pitting, or corrosion - inner face, rear, and upper portion of frame show some moderate corrosion from normal use. Sharp markings and sharp edges - excellent screws and nipples. Barrel and frame retain about 85% original factory nickel - cylinder about 70% with nearly 70% visible scene (uncommon on the Whitneys) - the cylinder has the 6 safety notches proper on the 2nd Type. Brass guard retains nearly 90% silver plate - hammer retains just a hint of case color. Walnut grips are near excellent with about 70% finish remaining and showing only some minor dings on the butt and a very small chip on the upper right grip. About 33,000 of the Navy model were made in the late 1850s and early 1860s, most of production went to the US Govt. - the factory nickeled pieces were designed for Naval use but this is one that was evidently sold on the civilian market so is rather rare. A very sharp old Whitney Navy from the Civil War era that is all original and in Fine + To excellent condition and will make a fine addition to any Civil War collection.
