#4638 Germanic Jaeger Flintlock Rifle, 30” octagon barrel, sliding wood patchbox
Description: #4638 Germanic Jaeger Flintlock Rifle, 30” octagon barrel, sliding wood patchbox, age and maker unknown. But being as it has barrel keys and pinned ramrod pipes, this should date it in the mid-1700s …assuming it is, of course, an original gun. There are several things that lead me to believe that this might be some sort of composite “parts gun” that was made as late as the late 1800s or early 1900s using early parts. As an example, the lock, while being old, does NOT look to be 1700s, nor does the wood. The lock looks to be from the 1820s and the wood looks more in the CW era. The barrel itself does look pretty old, but the exterior of the metal looks a bit too good to be 250 years old. The massive 75-caliber bore DOES look old enough to be from the 1700s, and the touch hole has also been resleeved as one might expect from a gun of that age. There has been some filing done on the metal and some later initials stamped here and there (see photos). All-in-all, it is a neat looking old gun in good functioning condition, and if nothing else, it is a great wall hanger and conversation piece. About VG+ as described. $745 SOLD Antique: Yes |
