Soper Action Single Shot Rifle by Rawbone of Capetown
Description: Serial #495, .450 No. 1 Express, 27" barrel with a very good bore that has some dark freckling within the grooves. This is a very rare rifle utilizing Soper's patent for a side-lever actuated, lifting block action. The rifle has a Henry-rifled barrel, and is maker / retailer marked on the left side of the receiver: “W. RAWBONE / CAPETOWN". The action is quite sophisticated and depressing the single side-lever unlocks the breech, cocks the hammer, swings the breech-block up and to the right, and extracts and ejects the fired cartridge case. The barrel has an overall dark plum-brown patina with even freckling, and the patina carries over onto the receiver, lever, and trigger guard. Some faint traces of original color case-hardening can still be seen on the underside of the breech-block. The walnut stock has been lightly sanded and revarnished with some diagonal with-the-grain cracks present on the left side of the butt, as well as on the right side at the receiver / side-lever. These rifles are over-engineered, but ingenious, and the Soper achieved a fantastic rate of fire in British Army tests before being rejected for being too complicated to mass produce. This example is in very good condition, and would make a great addition to any collection.
