Winchester 1866 SRC MILITARY INSPECTED 1871 Saddle Ring One of a Kind!
Description: I can just about guarantee that you don't have one of these. This 1866 was inspected by US Military arms inspector G.K.Jacobs who was an Army inspector for the Amoskaeg Musket from 1865-1875. No one I have talked to has been able to solidify the reason for the military inspection. As most of you know, Winchester never had a military contract in this time frame. There are some inspected rifles and carbines that went to South America in 1877 time frame. This one here however was made in 1871! This was right in the middle of the reconstruction period and the huge push to the frontier by civilians and Military. I've talked to the Cody Museum Currator and sent pictures with no luck but the fact that it was the only one he had seen. Speculations have ranged from a Winchester sampler that was sent to try and procure a contract, to a small number of guns that may have been inspected just for frontier soldiers establishing forts. The gun itself is a solid example with high and tight wood that any collector would be proud of even without the unique provinance. Wood is solid with no noticeable cracks. For whatever reason sling eyes were added back when it was made just based on the style and fit. Brass has not been cleaned and has a beatiful finish. ALL serial numbers match, so no this isnt a musket buttstock. Buttplate and stock screws look like they hadn't been removed much based on the shine still presnt on the shafts. Gun has a lot of uncleaned green verdigris inside as seen. The crease on the left side of the stock is NOT a crack as seen in pics under buttplate. Bore is still shiney with a little corrosion here and there! Blue on barrel and mag has turned but is original. There is still traces of case color on the base of the hammer as seen. Mechanics are great. I guarantee you can find a BETTER 1866 SRC. However, I don't think you will EVER have a chance to own another one like this! Give me a call with questions or an offer. Or email. FOR MORE PICS. 912-227-3007 Thanks. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1866 Serial Number: 69681 Caliber Info: 44rf |
