Exquisite 18th Century Gold Embellished German Flintlock Hunting Rifle
Description:
NSN, .54 Caliber, 32 1/2" swamped, octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves.
This is a truly handsome rifle that has a general bright, pewter gray patina on the barrel and lock.
There is evidence of some older pitting but the metal was expertly cleaned at some point leaving crisp and sharp edges, as well as a clear maker's name on the top barrel flat: “MATHEVS*GRAM*IN*AVGSPURG"; additionally, the numeral “5" appears just behind the Gram hallmark at the breech.
The lock has minimal scrollwork engraving, concentrated at the base of the swan-necked cock, and towards the rear of the lockplate.
The pin-fastened stock is of fairly modern manufacture having crisp, decorative carving surrounding the lock and on the buttstock.
There are ten original gold inlays, each having extensive, deep relief, geometric and floral scrollwork engraving with stippled backgrounds, some of which also have representational vignettes as well: a soldier or hunter walking towards a haloed saint and lamb on the nosecap; an eagle on the ramrod tailpipe; and a martial panoply on the trigger guard bow.
The gold has a generally bright patina with a few traces of dark staining within the engraving itself.
The rifle is further equipped with a highly unusual, removable lens on a hinged, flip-up stem that rests in a metal mount at the front of the comb.
The glass lens is convex, so is intended for a user with hyperopia (far-sightedness), and is a rare instance of an original optical sight on a gun made in the mid to late 1700s.
The rifle comes to us from an old Swiss collection, and although some conservation work has has been performed on the rifle, it remains a fascinating and beautiful 18th century piece.
Matheus (or Mateus) Gram operated in Augsburg, Bavaria from 1749 -1777 and was a prominent Swabian maker.
