Harpers Ferry Musket U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock
Description: NSN, .69 cal., 42” barrel with a very good, freckled bore. This is an original, 1st type, original flintlock musket that has a mixture of plum-brown patina and original browning on the barrel, lock, and furniture. Crisp “(eagle)/US”, and “HARPERS/FERRY/1819” markings are present on the lockplate, and the proof markings on the 1819 dated barrel are clear and legible as well. There are some further markings on the top radius of the breech that may be a unit or rack number: “D/45”. The brass pan has a dark ochre tarnish with a mild green tint along the edges, and the barrel bands retain most of an old, armory applied coating of protective varnish that has flaked to the underlying gray metal along the edges. The walnut stock has an excellent armory re-applied military oil finish with scattered small handling marks and minor surface blemishes and visible, but illegible cartouches. The buttplate has light pitting along the surface that gets heavier towards the “US” marked tang. A correct, all-metal ramrod with matching coat of varnish is included and the mechanism functions flawlessly. A brass collection tag is looped onto the swivel that reads, “JWB/515”. This is an excellent example of a desirable first type Model 1816 musket by Harpers Ferry, and would make a spectacular addition to any collection of high grade U.S. weapons.
