Nice Antique MAKER MARKED Half Stock Plains Rifle
Description: Nice Antique MAKER MARKED Half Stock Plains Rifle Quintessential Pioneer Rifle in .44 Caliber w 2 Names Here we present an antique Half Stock Percussion Rifle, made circa 1840. The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle: “From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination. Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.” This .44 caliber rifle features a stout, half-octagonal, half-pendedecagon (fifteen facets) barrel, highly unusual. The top flat of the barrel is marked with the names “J.S. PITTENGER” and “B. LAWRENCE”. The stock is very handsome tiger maple. The lock is nicely engraved. The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a nice, even patina. The markings are legible. The stock is nicely grained, a bit worn and weathered, with a few small and very old repairs. Overall it is solid. The bore is rifled and in good condition. The action is strong and does not have a half cock. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Here is a great example of a rifle that would effectively hunt and defend on the frontier. Barrel is 31-5/8 inches in length. Caliber: .44 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
