Scarce Antique “Pomeroy” CIVIL WAR M1840 Musket
Description: Scarce Antique “Pomeroy” CIVIL WAR M1840 Musket With NEW JERSEY Marked Bayonet & Frog Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1840 Musket, with Bayonet & Leather Frog. This musket was originally made in flintlock configuration in 1842 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, by Lemuel Pomeroy. Pomeroy was a perennial contractor of U.S. martial weapons in the first half of the 19th Century, though he only made about 7,000 of this model. The U.S. Model 1840 was the last flintlock musket produced by the United States, and most were later updated to the percussion system for use during the American Civil War. To put it in perspective, only about 30,421 of these muskets were made according to Flayderman, and nearly all of them would go on to be updated, about 27,000. Several different conversions were contracted out, and this one is known to have been performed by Hewes & Phillips of Newark, New Jersey. Speaking of New Jersey, the original leather frog that houses the bayonet is marked “E.A. CROSSMAN & Co./NEWARK/N.J.”, a known supplier of harness and other leather goods for cavalry and infantry during the Civil War. The frog is also marked “J.C. MILLER/SUB INSPECTOR/U.S./ORD. DEPT.” The bayonet is marked “US”. This musket features a lock marked “L. POMEROY” and “1842/US”. The butt plate is marked “US”. Conversions of this musket performed by Hewes & Phillips are known to have been contracted by the state of New Jersey for their own state troops as well as the US government during the first year or two of the Civil War. The bolster and hammer of the conversion are very robust. Since both sides experienced an arms shortage that forced them to go overseas in search of whatever serviceable arms they could import for their troops, it is no surprise that obsolescent flintlocks would be converted en masse. The overall condition of this musket is good. The original finish of the iron parts would have been left in the white. The metal surfaces are lightly pitted. The lettering on the lock is clear and legible. The walnut stock is smooth and solid. The bore is smooth and in good condition. The action is strong. The bayonet is very good. The frog is also very good, with clear markings. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Here is a fantastic example of a flintlock arm that was updated to serve the North during the American Civil War! Barrel is 42 inches in length. Caliber: .69 Overall condition as seen in photos.
