Lyman No. 1 tang peep sight. Barrel marked: Old Reliable - Sharps Rifle Co. Bridgeport. Conn., and Business 45, beinng .45-70 2.1". Plain, uncheckered, oil finished walnut stocks with splinter forend, straight grip and steel rifle buttplate. Double set triggers. Y inspector's mark at base of loading lever.Weight 10 lbs, 6 oz. Pull: 13 3/4". Patent date: April 6, 1869. Built 1877. Retaining 85% original barrel blue and traces of original casehardening colors on the receiver. Numerous light scratches in the wood and some deep wear of the underside of the forend, but no cracks and stock appears never to have been removed from the metal: the action screws, retaining traces of fire-blue, appear never to have been turned. Very good bore. Exceptional overall condition for a model that normally saw rather hard use. Comes with letter from Sharps' historian Richard J. Labowskie, MD with the following information from Sharps records. "Sharps serial # 1613XX has been located in the original records of the Sharps Rifle Company. It is listed in Order Book No. 6 as a Model 1874 Business Rifle and was invoiced at the Bridgeport factory on January 7, 1878 to Schulyer, Hartley & Graham, gun dealers and wholesalers of new York City. The rifle is further described in the record as being .45 caliber, with a 28" round barrel, double set triggers, open sights and oil finished stocks. The price was $35 less 20 + 10%. Fifty identical Business Rifles in five wooden packing cases went sent to Schuyler, Hartley & Graham firm on this date for a total invoice of $1260. Interestingly, sixty Model 1874 Sporting Rifles were also sent on this same date. The SH&G firm wholesaled many Sharps rifles to the Western part of the country at this time and after the Sharps Rifle Company ceased production in October 1880.'' SOLD Antique: Yes |
