War of 1812 British Chief's Grade Trade Gun
Description: .62 caliber, 36 3/4 inch barrel, 52 1/4 inches over all, lock converted to percussion, marked Galton, "boar's head and horn" on lock plate and brass butt plate, silver Indian warrior thumb piece indicative of Chief's Gun on wrist, barrel carries Birmingham proof marks and faint "fox in circle", all brass trigger guard has crack in tang, brass trade gun ram rod thimbles, all brass has dark aged patina, lock is mechanically good, iron parts have deep aged patina, stock has various use dings with minor loss along barrel and around lock, period coat of shellac or varnish. British government contracted with 16 makers to supply these trade guns. The intended purpose was that they be given as gifts to strategic Indian leaders. The leaders would then be favorably disposed to aiding the British against the Americans in the War of 1812. SOLD Antique: Yes |
