Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Rifle
Description:
Winchester Model 1885 Hiwall Rifle with 30" Octagon Number 3 Weight Barrel. Caliber is in 32-40 which is a great target round. This cartridge held the world's record for a 10 shot group at 200 yards for over 100 years. Early antique Serial number is in the 9000 range. Made in 1887. Standard 2 Line Winchester barrel address on top flat ahead of rear sight. The High Wall has an interesting history in that it was orginally designed and built not by some industrialist in the East but on the American Frontier. When this design was first discovered in 1883 out West by one of their traveling salesmen, Winchester sent their Vice President by train to Ogden, Utah to find the inventor and purchase the design. When he finally got to Ogden, he found a young man named John Browning building these rifles by hand with the help of his Mormon Brothers. The rest of course is history and along with the serial number on the lower tang, you'll find Browning's original 1879 Patent Date. Forend has the original ebony inlay. Standard sights and crescent buttplate. Overall Condition is in NRA Antique Fine Plus Condition with good original case colors on the frame which are starting to fade a bit. Barrel has 80% original blue with wear to the original finish around the barrel address from where this rifle was carried in a hunter's hands. Nice screws, markings, and edges. Action is perfect. Bore is Excellent...Bright with strong lands and grooves and no pitting. Original Walnut Wood is in Fine Plus condition with much of the original varnish remaining on the stock and front and rear portions of the forend. There is some loss of varnish in correspondence to the barrel from general carry wear. Overall, this is a really clean untouched example of the Model 1885 Single Shot.
