***SOLD**** Exceptional J.M. Marlin Ballard Special Order Offhand rifle chambered in 40-63 Everlasting, circa 1881. The serial number of this rifle, SN 5308 is actually listed by serial number in J. Dutchers book on Ballards (p189), in the Chapter on 6-1/2 Offhand rifles, but is lacking many of the features of the 6-1/2.
On pages 282 and 283, S/N's 4406 and 5266 are identical to S/N 5308, exhibiting the same trigger, hammer, Vernier tang sight, lever, stock, butt plate, and rebated receiver; the only difference being is this rifle is not engraved.
After considerable discussion with Ballard aficionados, many from the ASSRA forums, the conclusion was reached that this rifle was likely a special order rifle made specifically to meet NRA requirements (ref pages 284 & 285)
This Ballard rifle sports a 30", part round/part octagonal barrel and case colored receiver. The bore is fantastic for its age, very shiny with crisp rifling. Barrel bluing is very good, appearing to be all original, turning to a light patina in areas. Receiver shows substantial original case color for its age. The nicely checkered fore-end and butt-stock fit very well culminating in a Swiss style buttplate. Single standard trigger. Short Mid Range Vernier tang sight and standard windgauge front sight. This is an antique so no license is required.
$4950 plus shipping, shipped in hard case.
Sold as a collector’s item only, no warranty written or implied, always have the gun checked out by a qualified gunsmith before firing….this is an antique & no license required, must be over 21 and provide photo ID (make sure you can own this in your state/locality)…Shipping actual cost (shipped in hard case) ……3-day non-firing inspection – any disassembly voids returns – shipping not refundable.
Please also see my listing on the Ballard Schoyen Scuetzen rifle. I can do better on a package sale of both rifles.
