Identified Merrill Civil War Carbine to Private Alonzo Murphy. This is actually a pretty sharp gun with good markings and even a visible cartouche on the wood. All markings are present and this gun has a light brown patina on the metal. This gun was issued to Private Alonzo Murphy in Company A of the 7th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry. Private Murphy was 18 when he enrolled and was described as being 5’7”, darkly complected with hazel eyes and black hair. This unit was all over and participated in skirmishes from Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas. Accompanying this gun is a letter signed by Frank Mallory of Springfield Research Service detailing where he found the records on this gun being issued to Private Murphy. Very neat identified Merrill Carbine!
