CIVIL WAR Antique UNION Gallager CAVALRY Carbine
Description: CIVIL WAR Antique UNION Gallager CAVALRY Carbine Also Used in the FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR 1870-1871 Here we present an antique Gallager Carbine, made by the company Richardson & Overman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1860 through May of 1865. Ironically, the designer of this Union carbine, Mahlon J. Gallager, was a native South Carolinian, living in Savannah, Georgia, when he invented and received a patent for this carbine. All but 5,000 of the 18,000 guns produced during the years of the war were made at the factory as percussion guns. This example is one of those 5,000 which was not, but instead fitted with a firing pin and an extractor for the 56-52 Spencer cartridge. Per Flayderman, “The Gallager saw extensive service during the Civil War. Among the many cavalry regiments armed with it were the 2nd, 3rd and 6th Ohio, the 13th Tennessee and the 3rd West Virginia.” After the Civil War, many were sold as surplus by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, in 1860 the largest firearms dealer in the United States. Some 2,500 went to France during the Franco-Prussian War from 1870-1871. Others went to various other places, such as Havana, Cuba. This example is in overall good condition. The metal is dark and the case colors muted. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is solid. The sling ring bar has been deleted. The rear sight is welded on. The bore is in good condition and the action is fine. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 22-1/4 inches in length. Caliber: .56-52 Spencer Bore is in good condition. The firing mechanism is fine. Overall condition as seen in photos. Here is a scarce American Civil War Cavalry Carbine that has history extending into Europe! Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
