Sharps ‘New Model 1863’ Carbine, Original Percussion, High Condition
Description: The Sharps percussion carbines, models 1859 and 1863, were likely the most popular and widely used cavalry carbines by both sides in the American Civil War. Consequently they saw heavy usage throughout the war and continued in service on the frontier after the war ended. Their design lent itself to conversion to metallic cartridge and large numbers of surviving percussion Sharps carbines were converted to .50-70 center fire in 1867-68. A limited number of Civil War Sharps carbines have survived to this day in their original percussion form. Since the beginning of avid Civil War carbine collecting around seventy years ago collectors have found high condition original percussion examples of Sharps Model 1859,1863, and NM 1863 carbines to be very difficult to find. This Sharps New Model 1863 carbine, likely built in 1864, is one of that rare group. Condition: The barrel and barrel band retain 93% original blued finish ( EAW ) inspector marks on left side of breech. The bore is excellent and shiny with some very slight frosting at the breech from use with fulminate caps. Mechanical functions are excellent including the Sharps pellet primer. The receiver, lock plate, and hammer retain at least 70% Sharps casehardening with some slight fading. The lever and butt plate casehardening is faded with slight color showing. The screws show most of their blued finish. The walnut stocks are excellent with proper Civil War inspector’s marks and old/original finish. This is an original Civil War issued Sharps carbine with matching serial numbers. It shows some genuine use but has evidently been very well cared for over the last 150 years. This carbine is fresh to the market from an estate.
