CIVIL WAR Antique US SPRINGFIELD 1861 Rifle-Musket
Description: CIVIL WAR Antique US SPRINGFIELD 1861 Rifle-Musket Primary Infantry Weapon of the American Civil War Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, made at Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1863. The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1863 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel, and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike solid round ball. This .58 caliber rifle’s lock is marked “1863” and “U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. The top of the butt plate is also marked “US”. Two government inspector cartouches are visible on the left side of the rifle, the more clear of which bears the initials “ESA”. “ESA” is for Erskine S. Allin (the Master Armorer soon to be inventor of the trapdoor conversion of these muskets). The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have a dark patina. The markings are legible. The walnut stock is battle-worn, and solid. The front barrel band screw has sheared in half, making the band loose. The bore is in good condition. The action is strong. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40 inches in length. Caliber: .58 percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1600 #10453 SOLD Antique: Yes |
