Civil War Model 1861 Rifle-Musket by Trenton
Description: NSN, .58 Caliber, 40” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This handsome Civil War musket has an 1864 dated lockplate with an 1863 dated, “NJ” marked barrel that has crisp “V/P/(eagle)” proofs on the left side of the breech. The metal has a nice armory bright finish interspersed with mild plum-brown freckling along its length, a darker patina forming on the head of the hammer, and traces of old protective lacquer still present on the “U.S./TRENTON” marked lock. There is some further mild pinprick pitting on the nipple bolster, and there is a smoother area of metal at the muzzle where some sort of cover once protected the barrel. The walnut stock is likewise in fine condition with a crisp re-applied military oil finish over only very light handling marks and a single diagonal with-the grain crack running down to the state cartouche on the left side. Additionally, there is a series of negligible surface chips at either side of the buttplate, and a crisp “NJ (in oval)” cartouche on the left side opposite the lock. This is a fine example of a desirable, state marked Civil War musket and would make a great addition to any collection.
